Fast Five with Dr. Tiana Crawford
Eastern Radiologists is proud to welcome Dr. Tiana Crawford, an expert breast imager who joined our staff at the Breast Imaging Center in Greenville in July 2017. Originally from San Diego, Dr. Crawford earned a BS in mathematics from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, and an MD from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. She went on to complete a four-year diagnostic radiology residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, and she recently completed a breast imaging fellowship at the University of Illinois School of Medicine’s Susan G. Komen Breast Center.
What attracted you to Greenville?
“Although I was born and raised in California, I am fortunate to have roots in Virginia where my mother was born and her family remains,” says Dr. Crawford. “My sister resides in Charlotte, so the close proximity to family made Greenville very appealing. Additionally, I was very much impressed with the 60-year history of Eastern Radiologists, and I had great chemistry with the other breast imagers.”
What made you choose breast imaging for your specialty?
“I really like the fact that breast imagers can do two things: 1) interact with patients daily, and 2) interact with specialists from various fields, like pathology, surgery and oncology. I love the interdisciplinary approach.”
What are your feelings on mammography recommendations that seem to be constantly changing?
“I agree with the American College of Radiology that women should begin mammograms at 40 and repeat them annually. Throughout all the changing recommendations, one thing has remained consistent, and that’s the fact that screening at 40 decreases mortality.”
I’m sure free time is minimal for you, but how do you like to spend it?
“I enjoy playing tennis, traveling, hiking—really doing anything outdoors,” says Dr. Crawford. “What’s really nice about Greenville is that even during the winter months I can get outside to jog or enjoy a lot of other outdoor activities.”
If you enjoy traveling, then you’ve probably seen some amazing places. What has been your favorite?
“I was recently in St. Maarten, and it’s just such a beautiful location with tranquil beaches and great food. The minute you step onto the island, you’re automatically transported into relaxation and vacation mode. I stay busy, so I really appreciate that!”
