Easing CT Anxiety 

When your medical provider says they want you to have a CT scan, your mind may begin to wander….What will it be like? How long will it take? Will it be painful?  No worries, we’re here to ease your mind and make sure your appointment is stress free!

Let’s walk you through your CT scan, so you’ll know what to expect.

• CT scans performed at Eastern Radiologists are done as outpatient procedures. You’ll be able to return to your normal daily activities right after your scan.
• Prior to your test, you may be asked to change into a patient gown. It will be easier if you leave all jewelry and valuables at home. If not, we have lockers available for your convenience. You can also bring your personal belongings into the room with you. 
• If your scan requires contrast, and intravenous (IV) line will be started in your hand or arm for injection of the contrast material. For oral contrast, you will be given a liquid contrast to drink.
• If you receive IV contrast, you may feel effects such as a flushing sensation, brief headache, salty or metallic taste in the mouth or nausea and/or vomiting. These effects are usually temporary. If you should experience any difficulty breathing, sweating, heart palpitations or numbness you should let the technologist know. 
• You will lie on a table that moves as it slides into the large, circular opening of the CT machine.
• The technologist will be in a separate room but will have full sight of you through a window and will be able to communicate with you through an intercom system.
• As the exam begins, the scanner will rotate around you. You may hear clicking sounds, which are totally normal!
• All you have to do for the exam is lie still. You may be asked to hold your breath periodically.
• Typically, your entire scan will be completed in anywhere from 10-30 minutes, depending on what type of scan you are having.
